Young Diabetic Training Program at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal

Manipal: The ICMR sponsored “Young Diabetic Training Program” is being organised at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal on Saturday, December 3 from 2 pm to 5 pm at the Department of Paediatrics, K B Block for Maternal and Child Care at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal. This unique programme for the identified young diabetics who are lesser than 25 years old and their parents is a joint initiative by Dr Sudha Vidyasagar, Unit Head, Department of Internal Medicine who is also the Coordinator of the ICMR National Registry of Young Diabetics, Dr Manjunath Hande, Head of the Department of General Medicine and Dr Srikiran Hebbar, Head of the Department of Paediatrics. The Guests of Honour for the valedictory function would be Dr Poornima Baliga, Dean KMC Manipal and Dr (Col) M Dayananda, Medical Superintendent and COO, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal.

The primary objective of the programme is to make the young diabetic patients fit enough to lead a normal life. The training programme includes general screening of the participants and examination by physicians. Experts will interact with the children, adolescents and youngsters along with their parents. The programme will commence with inspiring testimonials of young people living with diabetes but have come out successful to motivate their counterparts. Practical Yoga demonstration to maintain their physical fitness and health is another important area of the training programe.

To upkeep mental fitness, there are separate specialised sessions by the clinical psychologists for adolescent, adult patients and diabetic children along with their parents. These sessions would provide ways and thoughts to move forward in their life.

The programme includes interaction with specialists from the Department of Dietetics and Nutrition to guide them about the aspects of healthy diet.

The programme will conclude with a drawing competition for children and quiz for the adult group. There would be games to make the programme enjoyable and a cultural programme by Saanvi.

The participants registered for the “Young Diabetic Training Program” would be surveyed to identify the challenges they face as young diabetics and the organisers would come out with support programmes that eases their difficulties and make their life hassle-free.
