Mangaluru: The A J Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Centre is conducting PHOENIX 2017, an International Medical Students’ Conference, from March 22 to 26.PHOENIX 2017, is the second such conference, the first being in 2014 organised for both the undergraduates and postgraduates from all over the world. The event will witness the participation of eminent speakers such as Dr. Zhuo Hua Pan from Wayne State University, USA; Dr. Roger Evans from Monash University, Australia; Dr. Anita Borges from Asian Institute of Oncology; Dr. Ranjan Kumar Pejavar from St.Martha’s Hospital; Dr. Anthony Pais from Narayana Hrudalaya- Mazumdar Shaw Institute of Oncology and Dr. Cheng Hwee Ming from the University of Malaya, Malaysia among others addressing its delegates.

Students from over 50 countries have registered and nearly 250 original research papers will be presented. The students will also get an opportunity to have a hands-on experience to learn practical aspects of medical procedures and go beyond the basic classroom teaching with around 35 workshops being conducted. Several social events will be hosted at the end of the day which will help the delegates to unwind and also have a chance to build a great network with people from all over the globe.

Addressing the gathering at the inaugural programme held on March 23 at the A J Auditorium, K C Venugopal, Member of Parliament and Chief Guest on the occasion said that this was a good opportunity to gain extra knowledge since the conference will have a lot of students coming together, sharing their ideas and since it was an outdoor learning session it will have a different approach than the usual class room learning. “When people from all over the world come together and share their ideas and when minds from all over the world come together something new springs up in the order of solutions for medical problems,” he said.

Further he added that earlier, medical treatment was for the human body. However the specialisation of medical treatment for different parts of the human body has immensely helped patients, he said.

The welcome speech was delivered by Ashok Hegde, Dean and Programme Director-AJIMS, who introduced all the dignitaries on stage. Dr. Thimappa Hegde, Director of the Narayana Institute of Neurosciences and M Chandra Sekhar, Mangaluru City Police Commissioner were the Guests of Honour at the conference.

Speaking on the occasion, M Chandra Sekhar opined that people consider medical profession to be a noble one and he often ponders that his profession is not termed the same. He went on to say how his opinion changed when his son fell sick and underwent treatment from Dr. Nithin Shetty. During this period, he observed the doctor take such good care of his son which changed the way he viewed the profession.
