Mangaluru: International Yoga Day was observed at the Sahyadri College campus. Govind Prabhu, retired senior manager, Karnataka Bank Ltd., delivered a talk on “Yoga for Health” and demonstrated the same.
“The meaning of the word Yoga is “Union”. It is derived from the Sanskrit root “yuj,” meaning to join, or to unite. International Yoga Day is celebrated on the 21st of June every year as it is the longest day of the year. It is celebrated in 177 countries practising 3S programme–Swacch (Cleanliness), Swasth (Healthy) and Samarth (Wealthy). Yoga makes us to live in the present. Ashtanga Yoga is the most widely practised everywhere of which Maharishi Patanjali is the founder. Yoga teaches us four basic principles Yama, Niyama, Asana and Pranayama”, he said.
Govind Prabhu, served in the banking industry for 41 years. During his stay at Rajasthan in 1997, he met Baba Ramdev and learnt Yoga. Today, he is Dakshina Kannada Unit Patanjali Yoga Samiti treasurer. He is a certified trainer and conducts Yoga classes at various reputed institutions in and around Mangalore. He expressed his happiness and appreciated the initiatives taken at Sahyadri to promote Yoga.
