Mangaluru: The inauguration of classes for the first year students of St Joseph Engineering College – Vamanjoor, Mangaluru for the academic year 2017-18 was held on August 7 in the Kalam Auditorium.
Students as well parents were invited to be part of the inaugural event where all the first year batch students were officially inducted into the Josephite family. They were also given a brief tour of the college.
Ivy Lenet Saldanha, Head – Human Resources at the Tata Power Company Limited, graced the occasion as Chief Guest. Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, Director – SJEC, presided over the ceremony. The other dignitaries present on stage were Rev Fr RohithD’Costa, Asst Director-SJEC, Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal – SJEC, Dr Rio D’Souza, Vice Principal-SJEC, Dr Ramananda HS, Mathematics-HOD, SJEC.
In his welcome address Vice Principal Dr Rio said, “Students this is the first step towards becoming what you want to become.” He then elaborated on how to sculpt oneself to become a better engineer or a better man.
The respective department flags were unveiled by the department heads and a student of the department.
Addressing the students Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal- SJEC said that today a first step has been taken towards excellency in their respective fields of engineering. He gave a briefing on the rules and regulations, do’s and don’ts of the college.
This was followed by felicitating the achievers of PUC and CET with mementos.
Speaking on the occasion Ivy Lenet Saldanha thanked the institution and said that she was privileged to be the chief guest and to be among such brilliant minds.
Further she said that it was a great honor for her to come back to the college after 15 years and recalled her association with the college when it started. She proudly said that this college has made a great impact on the society and is being recognized all over India. Today the students are privileged to experience the world outside of college life with great knowledge and that all that knowledge is at your fingertips. She said the students to pursue their dreams even if the going may get tough and educate themselves on the challenges faced by companies and the world. “Optimize and try to reduce these challenges. Be an engineer and do what you do best, that is making the world a better place. Do some research on the future problems and real problems faced by the world,” she stated.
Rev Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, Director-SJEC gave the presidential address and thanked Ivy for being a part of this auspicious occasion and motivating them. He spoke about how the students and the parents are anxious to start college and embark on their careers. He added that he was sailing on the same boat as the first year students since he too has been here only for a month now. Later he spoke a about the college.
The Vote of thanks was given by the HOD of Mathematics department Dr Ramanada HS.
