Mangaluru: An intercollegiate economics fest, “ECONOVANZA” organised by the Department of Economics, St. Aloysius College was inaugurated here on February 22 at Eric Mathias Hall.
President, Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Jeevan Saldanha was the chief guest at the inaugural. Rector of SAC Institutions Rev Fr. Dionysius Vaz, S J presided over in the presence of Principal Rev Fr Swebert D’Silva, S J.
Addressing the gathering, Jeevan Saldanha said, “In today’s ever changing competitive world, knowledge of financial management in terms of economics is essential. The advantage of the economic students is that you have an edge over entrepreneurs like me. In the present scenario, nine out of 10 companies closed down in the first 10 years of their operation. Today Business is started based on a spontaneous urge to do something different without doing market survey, without studying what the market has to offer or the potential for businesses. Further, with the advent of technology, a lot of disruptive businesses have come into place ensuring closure of many entrepreneurial ventures. So you need to think out of the box. “
“Decision making will help you. In our country running a business is not easy. A CII report had said that India ranked 130 in the scale of ease of doing business in a study made on 189 countries. With the advent of GST, business in India will flourish. To succeed in business you need 90 percent hard work. It requires a ‘never say I am tired’ attitude. We at KCCI promote business and its development in diverse fronts in the district that may it be port, airport, railways and so on. We ensure business and the people do no suffer due to laws and policies. He concluded by quoting Steve Jobs “Follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become.”
More than 16 colleges from Karnataka, Kerala and Goa have confirmed their participation in the event comprising nine different competitions. Wealth out of Waste, Essay Writing, Quiz, Elocution, Budget Preparation, Advertising and Collage Making competitions will be parts of the day. Fashion show too will figure in the competition list along with an event titled “Turncourt.”
