Twenty-five fishermen escape as boat sinks off Bhatkal coast

Bhatkal: As many as 25 fishermen from a sinking boat near Netrani Island off Bhatkal coast were rescued by another fishing boat and Indian Coast Guard (ICG) on Wednesday, August 24.

According to sources, the boat ‘Amma’ worth Rs 60-70 lakh belonging to Nagesh Naik of Murudeshwar left Honnavar port on Tuesday night. It sprung a leak when it reached Netrani Island off Bhatkal coast. The crew members tried their level best to prevent the water from entering the boat, but in vain.

They then took the help of other fishing boat and ICG, and escaped from the sinking boat. All the crew members are reportedly safe. They could only save their fishing net while the other valuables sank along with the boat.

A case has been registered at the Honnavar police station.
