Ballari: In a tragic incident, an infant died after accidentally consuming an onion in Kanahosahalli in Ballari district on Saturday.

One-year-old Nityashree, the deceased was the only child of Kalpesh, a farmer and Archana. It is said that Nityashree was playing in the veranda on Saturday afternoon and slowly approached the onions that were scattered for drying. She took one of the large sized onions and swallowed it. The onion got stuck in her respiratory tract and she was unable to breathe and hence fell unconscious.

Unfortunately, as Nityashree did not cry loudly, her mother also failed to notice only to see after a while that the baby was unconscious. It was only after 45 minutes that the baby was rushed to a primary health centre (PHC).

“A lot of time was wasted initially because she was not brought immediately to the hospital. As soon as she came, we checked on her but unfortunately she was brought dead,” said Dr Jayasheel.
