Bengaluru: Stating that drug menace in the State cannot be compared with Punjab, Home Minister G. Parameshwara said a special drive would be launched against peddlers and manufacturers of narcotics.

Replying a query from BJP MLC Lehar Singh, who pointed out that Karnataka may soon become like Udta Punjab, a Hindi movie that depicts rampant drug menace in Punjab, the Home Minister said the government would take all measures against drug peddlers. Reiterating that foreign students, especially Nigerians, were involved in drug peddling in the State, the minister said the problem was rampant in the vicinity of professional colleges in Bengaluru, Mangaluru and other places.

Special cell to monitor social media

Minister for Home G Parameshwara said the government has proposed to set up social media monitoring and technical cells in every district.

The minister said one such district-level cell had been set up in Kalaburagi on a pilot basis. Similar cells will function in Police Commissionerates of Bengaluru and Mysuru and later extended to other districts.
