Bengaluru: In a shocking incident of police brutality, a 65-year-old man sustained severe head injuries when an irate traffic head constable allegedly attacked him with a helmet at Vijayanagar on Sunday. This incident triggered a protest by passers-by who demanded action against the policeman.

Later in the day, Deputy Commissioner of Police – Traffic (West) Shobha Rani suspended the head constable, Jayaram, attached to Vijayanagar traffic police station, and ordered a probe into the incident.

The incident occurred at Vijayanagar water tank signal around 1 p.m. when Ramakrishna, a retired government official, was heading to his home at Nagarabhavi in a car after visiting a friend.

As Ramakrishna reached the water tank junction, the traffic constable overtook him and stopped his motorycle ahead of the car. Ramakrishna honked a couple of times and asked the constable to give way as he had to take a right turn. Jayaram, however, refused and asked Mr. Ramakrishna to wait for the signal. Heated argument ensued when Ramakrishna got down from the car after Jayaram allegedly abused him. The argument turned violent when Jayaram allegedly assaulted Ramakrishna with a helmet. He started bleeding from the head and collapsed after a while.

Passers-by rushed to his help and shifted him to a nearby hospital before alerting the police. The police arrived at the spot and escorted Jayaram to the station.
