Bengaluru: Minister for Large and Medium Industries R.V. Deshpande said Tata Metaliks has informed the state government that it cannot implement Rs 15,000 crore three metric tonnes per annum (MTPA) integrated steel plant in Haveri due to the non-availability of mines and iron ore.
Minister Deshpande said that the company has requested for refund of money paid for allotment of land.
The project was proposed to be set up on 2,500 acres. A total of 1,658 acres in Boodugatti and Agadi villages, and 608 acres in Devagiri and Devagiriyallapura villages had been notified for acquisition. The project had been approved by the State High Level Clearance Committee (SHLCC). After the SHLCC clearance, the government went about acquiring land. Tata Metaliks project had cited the Supreme Court decision to allot mines only through auction and to ensure that priority be given to State-owned enterprises in allotment of mines.
The minister said the non-allotment of iron ore and mines to the company was a major reason that forced it to shelve the project.
