Bengaluru: The State government has decided to sort out the Cauvery water sharing dispute with Tamil Nadu by putting forth substantial argument at the Apex Court.
The decision came out after an all-party meeting convened on Saturday, August 27, to discuss the issue at Vidhana Soudha. The meeting was convened in the backdrop of Tamil Nadu’s move to appeal in Supreme Court over the issue. Tamil Nadu had appealed the Supreme Court to direct the Karnataka government to release Cauvery water soon for the standing Sambha crops, in a plea filed recently.
The hearing of the plea is likely to come up on September 2.
However, the State government has decided to place substantial evidence and argument before the court defending the state’s inability to release water to Tamil Nadu. The authorities and the ministry concerned have discussed the matter with state’s defence advocate Nariman, M B Patil, State Minister for Irrigation told in the meeting.
The minister also informed the phalanx of opposition leaders as well as fellow party leaders that the Cauvery delta received 42 per cent lesser rains this year.
All the participant members approved in consent to the State Government’s further plan of action over the issue.
Opposition party leaders like Jagadeesh Shettar, KS Eeshwarappa, HD Kumaraswamy and several farmers’ leaders like Kodihalli Chandrasekhar and other were present in the meeting.
