Bengaluru: A day after an image of a page from sociology notes listing the advantages of dowry went viral, which was allegedly distributed to students of St. Joseph’s College here, the college issued a statement saying that the teacher had not supported dowry in the classroom.

“The college has enquired into the matter arising from a Facebook post about the supposed pro-dowry slant in the B.A. Sociology syllabus. It is clear no teacher has made pro-dowry statements in the class,” said an official press release.

The release added that the method of Sociology requires students to look at opposing viewpoints carefully.

“We have found that the person making the Facebook post has selectively cited extraneous material from one of the source books suggested, with no understanding of the process followed in the classroom. Besides, the specific section of the book that was posted on Facebook was never recommended by the department faculty,” the press release said.

Stating that no student had raised this as a problem with the teacher, Head of the Department, or with the Dean of the Social Sciences, the college said that the institution has always taken such representations through the proper channels seriously.
