Bengaluru: Minister for Health K R Ramesh Kumar on Tuesday opined that no one should indulge in displaying wealth and it is not fair for affluent people to spend lot of money on marriages.
Speaking with media persons here on Tuesday, Ramesh Kumar said that he had introduced the first private member bill called the Karnataka State Wedding Karnataka Marriages (Registration and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2015. “The bill was aimed at stopping the excessive display of wealth at weddings. Unfortunately, the bill failed to come for discussion in the legislature. Now, I, as a minister, can’t introduce or demand for the bill. I can raise the issue during the Cabinet meeting scheduled for Wednesday. I think now the opportunity has come to raise the issue,” Minister Ramesh Kumar said.
When asked about the opinion on the expensive wedding invitation card from former minister G Janardhana Reddy’s family, the minister said that no person who have self-respect would attend such meetings. “It is a sheer obscene display of wealth. I will not attend this marriage. I will not attend such marriages if any of my relatives or friends indulge in displaying the wealth,” the minister said.
He recalled how simple his marriage was. “I did not invite my close friends, including MLAs even though I was the general secretary of Congress those days. Congress leader K H Ranganath was also not aware my marriage,” he said.
He said there are government agencies to probe into the source of such wealth of those persons who display their wealth.
