Bengaluru: The residents of Kudlu Gate and surrounding areas, who have called off the protest on Monday, are expected to meet Bruhat Bengaluru Mahangara Palike (BBMP) Commissioner Manjunath Prasad on Wednesday.

kcdcThe residents were protesting demanding the BBMP to shut down the compost unit maintained by Karnataka Compost Development Corporation (KCDC). They were protesting for two days (Sunday and Monday) in support of their demand but called off the protest for the closure of the waste-processing unit in Somasundarapalya after BBMP officials promised to address their grievances.

“The BMBP authorities told us there is no question of shutting down the KCDC plant but our demand is genuine. We have been telling the BBMP authorities to take suitable measures to mitigate pollution in these areas for the last two years but the authorities concerned have not done anything. We have also offered some useful suggestions but in vain,’’ said Kavitha Reddy, a member of Kudlu Gate, Haralur, Haralukunte, Somasundarapalya and Parangipalya (KHHSP), a federation of residents’ welfare association.

The residents demand the BMBP authorities to deposit less quantity of solid waste at the KCDC plant. They also suggested the BBMP authorities to take measures to clear the waste that was piled up at the KCDC plant for the last few years. “We want the BBMP authorities to ensure greenery in the vicinity of the KCDC plant. I want them to maintain Somasundarapalya Lake. If the BBMP could not maintain it, let it be handed over to Karnataka Lake Conservation and Development Authority (KLCDA). We are sure about the capability of KLCDA,’’ Kavitha Reddy said.

Meanwhile, Sarfaraz Khan, Joint Commissioner, Solid Waste Management (SWM), BBMP, initially suggested there was nothing wrong with the plant but later came around to residents’ point of view. Khan made it clear that the plant could not be closed down right away as the BBMP didn’t have any other option, but promised that only garbage from the Bommanahalli zone would be processed there. He also promised a detailed road map towards the gradual closure of the plant.

“I have visited some houses in the locality and enquired about the bad odour that is allegedly emanating from the KCDC plant but the residents told me they hardly come across the bad odour. The KCDC plant was established much before the formation of the residential layouts around it. We have arranged a meeting between BBMP Commissioner and the residents. Majority of the residents have no issues with the KCDC plant but only a set of people,’’ Khan said.

On the maintenance of Somasundarapalya Lake, the BBMP Joint Commissioner said that he would be happy to handover it to the Karnataka Lake Conservation and Development Authority.
