Bengaluru: The state government has decided to allow highway patrolling units to register cases, impose fine for traffic rule violations in a bid to make state and national highways accident-free.
The decision has been taken in this regard following the findings that fatal accidents are on rise in state and national highways.
According to the senior officials of the state police department, all these days, patrolling units were monitoring only law and order situation on highways and providing accident related services. But henceforth these units can stop vehicles for rule violations and impose fine. They are also allowed to register FIRs.
“Till now FIRs were registered only at police stations. But now these units will also be recognized as stations and traffic related cases can be registered,” informed a senior officer.
Officials feel that once these patrolling units start traffic monitoring related works, accidents on roads willcome down.
“At present, there are no checks on traffic violations on highways leading to overspeeding etc. But all these are expected to stop henceforth,” he concluded.
