Govt sanctions Rs 10 crore science projects: Minister Seetharam

Bengaluru: The state government has decided to implement seven programmes in the current year to further science education and research in engineering colleges, universities and research institutions, according to Science and Technology Minister M.R. Seetharam.

“The government has taken this decision based on the recommendations of the Vision Group on Science and Technology (VGST), headed by scientist C.N.R. Rao,’’ the minister said.

He said a sum of Rs. 10.04 crore has been set aside for 2017-18 for various research projects. During 2016-17, the VGST has received an overwhelming 1,260 applications and 143 projects were selected.

The government has taken a decision to establish the Centre of Excellence in Science, Engineering and Medicine for conducting “theme based” research in selected colleges, universities and research institutions in the State.

“A sum of Rs. 20 lakh per year will be given to each selected project for three years,’’ he said.

The VGST would select colleges, universities and institutes based on their applications for funding for establishing centres of excellence for conducting theme based projects, Science and Technology Minister M.R. Seetharam said. A sum of Rs. 30 lakh has been allocated for three years for establishing a Centres of Innovative Science and Engineering Education (CISEE).

For promoting research activity among young faculty members working in colleges, universities, and research institutions, it was decided to set up a Seed Fund. The funds would be utilised for providing money to faculty members to establish an early career in their field of research.

A sum of Rs. 2 crore has been set aside as the seed money. A one time grant of Rs. 5 lakh would be given to selected candidates.

A sum of Rs. 1 crore has been released for setting up a research fund for talented teachers in science and engineering colleges.

The fund would be utilised for encouraging talented teachers by grating a one time grant of Rs. 5 lakh.
