Bengaluru: Gauribidanur is one of the two assembly constituencies among the six assembly constituencies in Chikballapur district represented by Congress. The other assembly segment is Chikballapur. Independent candidate S.N. Subba Reddy represents Bagepalli in the State Assembly while BJP candidate Sidhanth got elected from Samri, a reserved constituency. Janata Dal (Secular) candidates M Rajanna and J K Krishna Reddy have got elected from Sidlaghatta and Kolar assembly segments.

The present incumbent Shiva Shankar Reddy N.H. has the track record of getting elected from Gauribidanur for four times. Once as an independent and thrice as Congress candidate from this assembly constituency.

As far as the popularity of Shiva Shankar Reddy, who holds of the office Deputy Speaker of State Assembly, is concerned, most of the voters in Gauribidanur are happy with him. Many of the voters know him and remember him for simplicity and humbleness.

“Nothing can stop MLA Shiva Shankar Reddy to get elected in the next Assembly elections. He has created a record by getting elected for four times from this constituency. There will be no one to give him a stiff fight in the next Assembly elections,’’ said Ramana Rao, a Telugu lecturer at the Government Arts College.

As far as the developmental works are concerned, the voters are happy with the ongoing works such as widening of the roads, strengthening of drains and drinking water supply. “We have no problems for drinking water. The municipality supplies sufficient water even in summer too. We have to depend on private water supplier whenever the borewell is under repair. There is a need to remove silt from the drains,’’ said Lakshminarayana S, a resident of Gauribidanur.

Shiva Shankar Reddy, a graduate, began his career as president of Gram Panchayat of Gauribidanur in 1978 and got elected to State Assembly as an Independent candidate in 1999. Later, Reddy joined Congress and got elected from here in 2004, 2008 and 2013. In 2008, Reddy defeated BJP candidate Ravinarayana Reddy N.M. by a margin of 11,168 votes. Congress candidate got 39,127 votes while BJP candidate polled 27,959 votes. Surprisingly, the fight was among Congress, BJP and JD(S) candidates in the elections held in 2013. It was between Congress and Independent candidates.

While Congress candidate Shiva Shankar Reddy got 50,131 votes, K. Jaipal Reddy, who contested as an Independent candidate, got 44,056 votes. The margin of votes of Congress candidate was reduced to 6,075 (in 2013) as against 11,168 votes in 2008. While BJP candidate Ravinarayana Reddy was relegated to third place with 31,837 votes, JD(S) candidate S.V. Ashwathnarayan Reddy was in the fourth place with 11,578 votes.

“There was a stiff fight in 2013. Independent candidate Jaipal Reddy tried his best to snatch this seat from Congress candidate. This assembly segment has the history of electing Independent candidates. Earlier, the present incumbent got elected as MLA from this assembly segment in 1999. However, Congress candidate’s track record helped him to retain this seat,’’ opines Ashwath Y, a farmer.

All in all, the present MLA will have no hassles to get elected in the next Assembly elections.
