Bengaluru: Former chief minister of Karnataka Dharam Singh passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest on Thursday, July 27. He was 80 years.
He had been admitted to M.S Ramaiah hospital. Singh, who has been ailing for some time due to age-related symptoms, was in the hospital for treatment to his respiratory system.
He was the 17th Chief Minister of Karnataka from 2004 to 2006. He was a Member of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly for seven consecutive terms and a Member of Parliament representing Bidar in the 14th Lok Sabha.
The former chief minister has been a staunch loyalist of the Congress party having joined it back in 1960s. He has served as a minister under various chief ministers such as Devaraj Urs, R. Gundu Rao, S. Bangarappa, M. Veerappa Moily and S. M. Krishna, and has handled diverse portfolios such as Home, Excise, Social Welfare, Urban Development and Revenue.
Dharam Singh, who was among the top accused in the Janatkal mining scam had been issued a summon to appear before the SIT investigating officer on July 30 to record his statement in connection with the scam.
