Bengaluru: Nearly 1.4 crore students studying in government schools will get flavoured milk in flexi packs under the state government’s flagship programme, Ksheera Bhagya from the next academic year.
The project will initially be launched in Tumakuru and Mangaluru on an experimental basis and once fully operational, the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) will start supplying 12 lakh litres of milk a week to all government schools. Currently 20,000 tonnes of milk powder is being supplied by the KMF.
According to KMF chairman P Nagaraju, flavoured milk in flexi packs will be supplied from their units in Tumakuru and Mangaluru. Besides these, two more units nearing completion in Belagavi and Koppal will also be utilised.
The government has asked KMF to supply flavored milk since there were complaints that students didn’t like powdered milk because of the smell and also health concern issue because of unhygienic preparation using locally available and unfiltered water.
According to Nagaraju, the education department was apprehensive about buying flavoured milk because of increased transportation charges.
