Bengaluru: The state Department of Public Instruction (DPI) has directed all the school headmasters to be extra careful while preparing the midday meal in the schools. This direction has been issued following the complaints that plastic rice is mixed with the rice supplied under the midday meal scheme.

According to the authorities, all started with complaints from the students of Halageri primary school in Bagalkot district that plastic pieces were found in the rice supplied to them under the mid-day meal scheme. Samples of both rice and the meal have been sent for the lab inspection.

Locals alleged that once the students started complaining, they changed the rice. “Similar incident was reported from another school also from the district,” explained an officer privy to the developments.

“Keeping in mind recent complaints we have directed all the headmasters to be extra careful,” informed a senior officer from the DPI.

According to the authorities, presently DPI has introduced the midday meal scheme in 55,464 institutions and every day 59.49 lakh students are benefited by this scheme.
