Bengaluru: The State government has chosen Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha M. Mallikarjun Kharge for the D. Devaraj Urs Award for 2017-18.
The award, which carries a purse of Rs. 2 lakh, will be presented to Mr. Kharge at the 102nd birth anniversary celebrations of the former Chief Minister in Bengaluru. An eight-member committee headed by writer Hampa Nagarajaiah, recommended Kharge’s name for the award.
In 2016, the government conferred the award on the former Minister, B.A. Mohideen.
Minister for Social Welfare H. Anjaneya said the panel chose Kharge for his contributions to society and because he is a follower of Urs’ principles.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will present the award at the Banquet Hall of the State Secretariat on Sunday.
