Bengaluru: A weekend trip proved to be near fatal for a 26-year-old entrepreneur whose hand was biten off by a crocodile while he was trying to rescue his dogs at Thattekere Lake in Ramanagaram district on Sunday.

Mudit Dandwate, an IIT alumnus and Indiranagar resident who hails from Nagpur and runs a healthcare startup in Bengaluru. He had gone trekking in a forest area near Thattekere Lake in Ramanagaram district, with a friend, police said.

The lake with a temple next to it is located in the middle of forest. A small gate separates the temple and the lake. The duo was accompanied by two dogs, which began running towards the lake when they saw water and jumped into it.

Mudit too ran behind the dogs to get them out of the water. In his hurry to get the dogs out of the water, he didn’t notice a board warning about crocodiles in the water.

As Mudit ran into the lake, a crocodile jumped out of the waters and ripped off his left arm from below the elbow, police said quoting his friend.

Mudit is currently undergoing treatment at Hosmat Hospital. Thomas Chandy, Chief of Orthopaedics, Hosmat hospital said that Mudit’s arm was completely crushed by the crocodile and he will have to be given a prosthetic arm.

Once this process is successful, the wound would be closed and he will be given prosthetic arm few months down the line, he added.

The forest department has taken over the investigation of the case from the local police as the incident took place inside a protected area. According to doctors, Mudit told his friends that he didn’t see fencing around lake.

Forest officials, however, claimed there were boards by the lakeside warning against crocodiles.
