Bengaluru: The police have nabbed the thief who made away with gold ornaments from a jewellery shop at Cottonpet in Bengaluru west suburb, said a top cop.
“After a tip off, the police nabbed the accused near Seven Loves Hotel, 45 km away from Hubballi,’’ Deputy Commissioner of Police Bengaluru west M.N. Anucheth told reporters on Monday.
The police have identified the accused as Mohammed Hussain, 32, hailing from Gomatipura of Ahmedabad in Gujarat. “We have seized 1 kg, 300 grams of gold jewellery and four kgs of silver ornaments and Rs 2000 from the accused person. The seized jewellery and ornaments are worth Rs 44.60 lakh.,’’ Anucheth said.
According to the police, the accused checked into a lodge in Cottonpet, drilled a hole into a jewellery store located on the ground floor and made away with gold and silver ornaments.
The burglary came to light on Sunday morning after Imath Prakash, the owner of Kanchan Jewellers on Cottonpet Main Road, opened shutter of his store.
This is the third incident of burglary in a jewellery store in the city in the last three weeks. The modus operandi in all the three incidents is similar. The police have suspected the involvement of professional gangs from outside the state. “During interrogation, we found the accused involved in two theft cases reported in Belagavi and Mangalauru,’’ the DCP said.
The police said the accused confessed to the crime. “He was leaving for Ahmedabad to dispose the stolen ornaments. He came to Hubballi from Bengaluru by a Karnataka State Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus. In an attempt to hide his identity, the accused had tonsured his head,’’ the police said. The accused was travelling in a private bus to Ahmedabad and police nabbed him near Seven Loves Hotel in Garaga police limits.
