Bengaluru: More than 100 bonded labourers, including children and adolescents, were rescued in a raid on an incense factory in Kaggalipura near the city on Thursday. The labourers were rescued in a joint effort by the police and the district authorities.

According to sources the rescued labourers are between the ages 15 and 30. “Based on information we received from the Deputy Commissioner’s office, we, along with the police, mounted a raid on Balaji Agarbathi Company at 6 am on Thursday and rescued 107 bonded labourers,” tahshildar said.

The factory is owned by Balaji and Bhaskar, who are said to be partners. It has been learnt that the labourers had not been paid for the last 20 months.

“Shockingly, we also found that they were not even allowed to leave the premises while they were living in shabby conditions. The labourers are mostly from Jharkhand, Assam, West Bengal and Nepal, who came to the city in search of work. They are being produced before the Assistant Commissioner (Bengaluru South), after which, they will be taken to different hostels where they will stay for the time being,” said Dr Dayanand.

The district administrations of the places where the youths belong to have been apprised of the situation. “The officials will soon arrive in the city to ensure that the labourers are taken back to their respective homes. An FIR will be filed,” said Dayanand.
