Bengaluru: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists on Wednesday staged a protest demanding the government to handover the probe into irregularities at Parappana Agrahara Central Prison and political murders in Dakshina Kannada district to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

The protest was organised under the leadership of BJP state president B.S. Yeddyurappa.

Addressing the agitators, Yeddyurappa said the law and order in the state has been deteriorating and political murders have become common in Dakshina Kannada district.

He questioned the government for transferring Deputy Inspector General (Prisons) D. Roopa who exposed the irregularities and corruption at Parappana Agrahara Central Prison. “I think the government wants to continue corrupt practices and irregularities at the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison by transferring honest police officers who come forward to expose those illegal activities. With this, the chief minister has conveyed a message that there is no protection for honest police officers in the state,’’ he said adding that government should order a probe into the irregularities by a High Court Judge.

The BJP state president alleged that government has not done its job to book those who are responsible for the political murders in Dakshina Kannada district. “I met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi on Tuesday and requested him to open a NIA office in Mangaluru,’’ he said.

Disappointed with the low-turnout of BJP activists at the protest programme, he advised the organisers to ensure the participation of BJP activists in large numbers in the programmes to be held in the future.

Earlier, Bharathi Shetty, president, BJP Mahila Morcha, blamed the state government for not taking any concrete measures to end corruption and stop political murders in the state. “Honest officers in the state have been harassed by transferring them frequently. A few of them are either committed suicide or killed. I want to tell this government the day is not far away when the people themselves will transfer you from power,’’ she said.
