BJP should stop indulging in potholes politics: Home Minister

Bengaluru: Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy on Friday blamed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders for indulging in petty politics on the potholes problems in the city.

“The BJP leaders are indulging in potholes politics instead of extending cooperation to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) in filling up thousands of potholes and craters developed on the city roads due to heavy rains,’’ Ramalinga Reddy told reporters here.

The minister said that Bengaluru has experienced heavy and excess rains since August 14 till date and the BBMP engineers and contractors could not commence pothole filling work due to the incessant rain in the city.

“Among the 58 days, the city has received rain for 46 days. There was hardly any time to fill up the potholes,’’ the minister said.

Expressing disappointment over the BJP leaders’ protest over the potholes in the city, he said that the BJP leaders have forgotten about their failure in keeping the city clean when they were at the helm of affairs. The minister added that the BJP’s achievement was to transform the “garden city” into the “garbage city”.

“It is quite surprising to see leaders like B.S. Yeddyurappa, R. Ashok and others staging protests on the road over the potholes issue. Yeddyurappa was chief minister and Ashok was minister during the BJP rule. They know why and how the roads in the city are damaged. I condemn them for trying to misguide people in the city,’’ he said.

The minister said the state government has allocated Rs 3,750 crore from 2013 to 2017 for the development of roads in the city and works worth Rs 1,750 crore were already completed.

“The remaining works worth Rs 2,000 crore will be taken up as soon as rain stops in the city,’’ he said.

Denying any discrimination in allocating funds to take developmental works in the city, the minister said that the funds were allocated to all Assembly constituencies including those represented by BJP legislators.

“C.V. Raman Nagar Assembly constituency got Rs 99 crore for developmental works, Hebbal Rs 37 crore, Mahalakshmi Layout Rs 62 crore, Malleswaram Rs 62 crore, Rajajinagar Rs 71 crore, Basavanagudi Rs 31 crore, Padmanabhanagar Rs 114 crore, Mahadevapura Rs 142 crore, Yelahanka Rs 73 crore, Bommanahalli Rs 50 crore and Dasarahalli Rs 45 crore,’’ he said.

He advised BJP legislators and corporators to focus on developmental works by utilizing the allocated funds instead of indulging in cheap and petty politics.
