Bengaluru has worst infrastructure among Indian cities

Bengaluru: Bengaluru has been ranked 177 globally— the lowest in the country — as per a report by consultancy firm Mercer rating Indian cities in terms of infrastructure.

In terms of quality of living, however, the National Capital for the second straight year hit the lowest score among Indian cities, with a global ranking of 161.

Bengaluru scores low mainly on account of public services and transport.

Speaking to DHNS, Ruchika Pal, principal and India practice leader, Global Mobility, Mercer says that the irregular power supply, frequent voltage changes, inadequate public transport, traffic congestion are the key setbacks and the main reasons for the low score.

For the third year in a row, Hyderabad has emerged as the best among Indian cities in terms of quality of living, while Vienna has been ranked at the top globally in the list by consultancy firm Mercer.

However, Hyderabad fell five places to 144 in this year’s global rankings from the 139th rank last year due to decreased power supply and water availability.

Both Hyderabad and Pune ranked higher for quality of living than the country’s traditional business centres Mumbai and New Delhi, which have been ranked at 154 and 161, respectively, in the report.

“The survey highlights that Indian cities that have been part of the survey haven’t made much progress on the quality of living scale since last year,” said Ruchika Pal.

Mercer’s survey also includes a city infrastructure ranking that assesses each city’s supply of electricity, drinking water, telephone and mail services, and public transportation as well as traffic congestion and the range of international flights.

Singapore topped the city infrastructure ranking, followed by Frankfurt and Munich, both in the second place. Port au Prince (231) is ranked at the bottom.

Among Indian cities, Mumbai is ranked the highest at 141 in terms of infrastructure, followed by Kolkata (149).
