Bengaluru: A youth claiming to be Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s relative has been nabbed for conning a woman and tricking her into buying an expensive mobile phone.
The suspect has been identified as Nijanthan Jayaram, 25, from Tamil Nadu, but settled at Gowdanapalya on Subramanyapura Road in south Bengaluru.
He has been remanded to judicial custody.
It is said that Nijanthan, a B.Sc graduate from a reputed college in Bengaluru was on a look out for job. Meanwhile, he befriended one Veena over Facebook and had claimed that he was a close relative of Jayalalithaa and that he could be of great help if she needed any favours in Tamil Nadu.
On February 8, Nijanthan called over Veena to meet up in UB City, saying that he wanted to gift her an iphone.
When Veena met up, Nijanthan took her to a showroom and made her select an iphone worth Rs 60,000.
Soon, claiming to have forgotten the cash and credit cards at home, Nijanthan made Veena pay using her card.
He then took the iphone from Veena on the pretext of downloading apps and returning it to her the following day.
But, he vanished. When his mobile phone remained switched off and when all her FB messages remained unanswered, she grew suspicious and went to the police.
The police traced him based on his Facebook details and call records and arrested him.
