Yeddyurappa illegal mining case: Noose tightens

Bengaluru: The CBI has gently woken up to the fact that it is required to fulfill the Supreme Court’s orders in the illegal mining case against the former chief minister – Yeddyurappa.

The Supreme Court had directed the premier investigation agency to probe the charges of criminal conspiracy, cheating, forgery and corruption connected to illegal mining against Yeddyurappa, his sons Shikaripura MLA B Y Raghavendra and B Y Vijayendra, son-in-law R N Sohan Kumar as well as steel major JSW.  The deal between the former chief minister and the steel company was first alleged in the illegal mining report submitted by then Lokayukta Justice Santosh Hegde in 2011.

The CBI laid low for two years and it was only on Friday that it presented its arguments  to frame charges against former chief minister and BJP national vice-president B S Yeddyurappa on Friday. While Yeddyurappa’s lawyers sought that the case be discharged, the CBI presented incriminating evidence – both oral and documentary – against the Lingayat strongman. The next hearing is scheduled for November 6 and the defense has been asked to file objections.

According to the probe so far,  Yeddyurappa’s family and its trusts have received monetary benefits to the tune of Rs.40 crore for an official favour to mining firms. Yeddyurappa’s family is accused of denotifying government land in Bengaluru, buying it for few lakhs and selling the same for a whopping Rs.20 crore to JSW subsidiaries, against a market value of a mere Rs.3 crore. Further, it was found that JSW sister firms had also donated Rs.20 crore to a trust run by Yeddyurappa the family. All these transactions were done to favour JSW, the prosecution maintained.

The prosecution cited oral statements of witnesses and the documents collected against the accused, as incriminating evidences. They sought framing of charge by the court, since a prima facie case has been made out.
