Two-phase gram panchayat elections on May 29 and June 2

Bengaluru: The State Election Commission (SEC) announced on Tuesday that elections to 5,844 gram panchayats (GPs) in the State will be held in two phases on May 29 and June 2.

inside votingA total of 2,81,56,987 voters in the State will go to the polls to elect 94,458 candidates to 5,844 Gram Panchayats out of 6,073 Gram Panchayats in the State at 38,604 polling stations manned by 1,93,020 polling officials, which will be held in two phases, said State Election Commissioner P.N. Srinivasachari, recently.

Addressing a press conference at his office in city, Srinivasachari said that elections to 229 Gram Panchayats would not be held now as their term will expire in August, 2015 and added that elections to these GPs would be held after the expiry of their terms.

Poll code of conduct

Announcing that poll code of conduct which would come into force from 8 am on May 10 will end on June 7, he added that poll code of conduct will be applicable only in Gram, Taluk and Zilla Panchayats limits across the State and clarified that the code will not be in force in limits of Town Municipal Corporations, City Municipal Corporations and City Corporations including Bengaluru city.

Continuing, he said that polling of votes which would begin at 7 am on these two days will end at 5 pm and added that counting of votes would be taken up from 8 am on June 5 at respective TP offices and results would be announced by evening on the same day.

Compulsory voting: SEC Srinivasacahari also said that the State Election Commission had issued a circular to the Deputy Commissioners to ensure compulsory voting besides offering to send a reminder in this regard.

However, those who abstain from voting will not be penalised this time as the government is still working on the modalities to provide incentives to make people vote, it is learnt.

NOTA: However, confusion continues to prevail among voters weather the option ‘None Of The Above (NOTA)’ will be available during the GP polls.

The Schedule

First Phase

In the 1st phase of GP elections on May 29, which will be notified on May 11 by respective Deputy Commissioners, voters in Mysuru, Kodagu, Chamarajanagar, Hassan, Mandya, Chikkamagaluru, Shivamogga, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Haveri, Gadag, Dharwad, Uttara Kannada, Vijayapura and Bagalkote will go to the polls, he said.

Calender of events for 1st phase: Last Date for filing nominations – May 18; Scrutiny of nominations – May 19; Last date for withdrawal of nominations – May 21; Date of polling – May 29; Counting of votes – June 5

Second Phase

In the second phase of polling, which will be notified by respective Deputy Commissioners on May 15, voters in Bengaluru Rural, Ramanagaram, Tumakuru, Chikkaballapura, Kolar, Chitradurga, Davanagere, Kalaburagi, Bidar, Raichur, Koppal, Ballari and Yadgir districts will go to the polls.

Calender of events for 2nd phase: Last Date for filing nomination – May 22; Scrutiny of nomination – May 23; Last date for withdrawal of nomination- May 25; Date of polling – June 2; Counting of votes – June 5.
