Shootout at school: Hostel attendant arrested for murder of teen

Bengaluru: In an act of revenge, a hostel attendant of a private college shot dead a 17-year-old PU student and injured another while they were sleeping in their hostel in Kadugodi on Tuesday night.

The accused, Mahesh K.(38) who used to do odd jobs at the hostel barged into the hostel room at around 10.30 PM on the third floor of the building while Gouthami, was sleeping and shot her twice at point blank range with a country made pistol he was carrying before walking into the adjacent room which was occupied Gouthami’s friend Shirisha. He knocked on the door, and Shirisha’s roomate opened the door. When he tried to shoot her, the gun did not fire, and the roomate escaped. He reloaded the weapon and fired at Shirisha. The bullet brushed the left side of the face of  Shirisha. While the profusely bleeding Shirisha collapsed on the ground, Mahesh walked on the corridor and confronted another student, who questioned him about his presence at that time. Enraged Mahesh tried to shoot the girl but since the weapon was jammed, he quickly escaped, City police Commissioner M N Reddi said.

Incidentally there was another girl sleeping in the room where Gouthami was shot dead.  Since she was in deep sleep, she was not able to hear any commotion, he said.

The South Division police in a swift action nabbed Mahesh from his sister’s house in K Narayanapura where he was hiding and recovered the weapon along with six live cartridges.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the accused who used to work in the college for the past two years and also work as an attendent in the hostel. He was dominating and dictating terms to the students setting rules for their behaviour at the hostel and outside. He used to direct the students not to talk to anyone from outside including teachers and principal.
 
Many times the students have complained and even Gouthami and Shirisha have had arguments several times and even complained to the principal.  Enraged by this he could have wanted to take revenge on them and deccided to kill them, Reddi said.

Replying to a question about the source of the weapon, Reddi said that the accused had gone to his native Agumbe in Shimoga recenlty and possibly returned with the weapon.

During interogation he named a place from where he had purchased the weapon, but we are corroborating it with the evidence, he said. The accused hails from Shimoga and was staying with his sister in Narayanapura.

Reddi said that a police team has been sent to Agumbe to verify the antecedents of the accused including the source of the weapon.

The accused has been booked sections that inovle Murder, attempt to Murder and various section of the Arms Act, while the chairman of the school identified as Som Singh has also been booked under section 188 ( Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant).
