‘Legalize prostitution’ says poet Nisar Ahmed, Pramod Muthalik supports

Bangalore :Celebrated poet K.S. Nissar Ahmed recently opined that in order to prevent the rising incidents of sexual atrocities on women, prostitution should be legalised.

He said that the government should take a decision on the matter after a detailed study and discussion. “You cannot say that there is no prostitution in Karnataka. Like in other cities, prostitution is taking place in Karnataka’s cities too. Hence, the sex-workers must be given a secluded place to carry out their trade. By this, not only the illegal practice will be checked, sexual atrocities on women will also be reduced,” said Nissar Ahmed, who is best known for his song ‘Nityotsava,’ apart from ‘Kurigalu Saar Kurigalu’ and other literary works.

Meanwhile, Roshan Baig, the Minister for Infrastructure Development, Information and Wakf, has mildly retorted to the poet’s opinion that prostitution cannot be legalised in Karnataka. “Of course, prostitution is legalised in Malaysia, Thailand and some other countries. But, the sex-workers there have medical check-ups regularly, thus preventing killer diseases like AIDS. But, we in India are still a conservative lot. Hence, it will lead to negative repercussions if prostitution is legalised,” he said. Both Nissar Ahmed and Roshan Baig expressed their views while participating in the inaugural ceremony of a photography exhibition here on Sunday.

Surprisingly, Pramod Muthalik, Chief of Sri Ram Sene, has endorsed the poet’s opinion. Speaking to presspersons here yesterday, Muthalik said that though the Hindu culture may not agree with Ahmed, due to rising incidences of sexual atrocities on women, legalisation of prostitution could be deliberated upon.
