Bengaluru: Several pro kannada organisations have called for a bandh on Saturday, April 18th to demonstrate unity and strength of Kannadigas, against the Tamil Nadu government for its attempt to stall the Mekedatu drinking water project across the Cauvery. This is in response to the bandh observed by Tamil Nadu to protest Karnataka’s move to build a dam across the Cauvery in Mekedatu on March 28th
Vatal Nagaraj, head of the Kannada Okkuta, a forum of pro-Kannada organizations, on Tuesday said 600 pro-Kannada organizations have expressed their support to the bandh.
With auto drivers’ and truckers’ unions backing the bandh, there is a likelihood of these vehicles not hitting the roads on April 18. Supply of goods is likely to be affected. A clear picture on availability of public transport will emerge in a few days.
To mobilize support for the bandh, Kannada activists will take out a procession across the city on Wednesday and distribute handbills, Nagaraj, a former MLA, said. Representatives of Dr Rajkumar Abhimanigala Sangha, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, Lorry Owners’ Association, Auto Drivers’ Association, Government Employees’ Association, besides functionaries of various pro-Kannada organizations, attended the meeting.
