Bengaluru: Even as the Karnataka High Court has given an interim green signal to the conduct of the Kambala, Dr.  Manilal Valliyate, Director of Veterinary Affairs, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India made a statement opposing the verdict.

“The Kambala organizers have won in court, but decency, integrity, justice and the bulls have lost. Where are the achche din for animals?” said Dr Valliyate in the statement.

The PETA stated that making animals go through unnecessary pain and suffering that is irrelevant, and that such abuse has already be considered illegal as per the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960, she explained in the release.

During Kambala, bulls may be deprived of food, water and shade; are forcefully yanked by nose ropes, often causing their noses to bleed; and are physically abused by whips, sticks or even bare-hands in order to force them to run beyond the point of exhaustion, Dr Valliyate said.

“We know so much more about animals today than we did yesterday, making Kambala races cruel. Such culture is unacceptable in the modern day.” She asserted.

She concluded stating that compassionate Kannadigas and other Indians and global citizens will rightly continue to protest against the Kambala, which have no place in a civilized society. PETA will not rest until Kambala races are relegated to the history books, where they belong, the statement added.
