Mangaluru: Mangaluru City Police on Friday arrested Gladys Almeida, accused of submitting fake divorce decree to the court to claim the property of Everest Pereira, who officially got married to one Carmeline Pereira in 1975.

On Saturday, Gladys Almeida approached the local court seeking bail. However, the Principal Judge sent her to judicial custody and adjourned the ruling on March 17.

Earlier in November last year, newskarnataka.com had written an elaborate report on the case, after Carmeline Pereira approached pillar to post fighting for justice.

According to the documents, Everest Pereira got married to one Caremiline Pereira in 1975. Mr. Pereira, who works abroad reportedly, developed intimacy with Gladys Almeida. During their course of ‘extra marital relationship’, Mr. Pereira died mysteriously in an apartment in Mangaluru. All this took place without the knowledge of Carmeline Pereira, who lives in a house belonging to Pereira with two kids in Mumbai.

After the death of her husband, Carmeline Pereira, filed a Suit No. 593.2007 in the first Additional Civil Judge, Junior Division, Mangaluru to claim the property of her husband. In that suit, Gladys Almeida had filed a Divorcee Decree, with Divorce Petition M.C. No.177 of 2004, reportedly filed by Everest Pereira.

However, the court had dismissed the Divorce Petition M.C. No.177 of 2004, as the petitioner died during the course of hearing and the petition was abated.

Hence, it’s alleged that Gladys Almeida, with the help of advocates created a fake divorce decree to claim the property of Mr. Everest.

After a series of follow up and submission of memorandum to the higher authority, the district court registered a case of fake decree in the Mangaluru City police station and the investigation is on. The arrest of Gladys Almeida is the first break in the case. It is suspected that many eminent advocates could be part of the foul play.
