Frazer Town Assault Case: Accused provides red herrings to Police

Bangalore: Police investigating the case of the frazer town sexual assault  have indicated that Hyder Nasir, the main accused who was arrested on Sunday, deliberately misled the investigation and attempted to save his accomplices  by providing false names and fake addresses  of his accomplices.

Under initial questioning on Sunday, Nasir had named two persons, Imtiyaz, 22, and Atiq, 24, as part of the gang.  Both had subsequently appeared on a local TV channel and denied any involvement. Police sources say that say that the men Nasir named are not involved in the crime. The two were detained, but later released.

It is learnt that Nasir named Imtiyaz (Imtiaz is  the brother of Brigade Azam, apparently an enemy of  Nasir)  and Atiq are they are his rivals and he wanted to divert attention from his friends and accomplices to his rivals, literally killing two birds with one stone.

Sources say the male friend who was abducted along with victim,  could not identify the two who were detained on Thursday morning. Obviously it would be difficult to go only by the male friend’s ability to identify the accused since it was dark and one of the gang had kept a knife to his neck right through the ordeal. He was able to see only two of the gang —Nasir and one other person who is still at large.

Meanwhile, Police commissioner Auradkar revealed that the police have detained two more suspects who have been identified as Wasim and Mohammed Ali. The two were said to be hiding in Andhra Pradesh.

Police expect to make progress on this front since Nasir was remanded to police custody on Thursday.

Action against Police Inspector

As a follow up to the alleged acts of omission by Inspector Mohammed Rafi in the case, the state government has filed a criminal case against the police Inspector.  An FIR (first information report) was filed against him under Section 166 (A) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Pulakeshinagar police station on charges of toning down the gravity of offence in last Friday’s Fraser Town Horror incident where a 22-year-old student was sexually assaulted in a car.

Deputy commissioner of police (east) N Satish Kumar said, “Assistant commissioner of police (Ulsoorsub- division) G B Manjunath will investigate the case registered against Rafi

The Police management, have taken officers, who had sympathised with and praised Mohammed Rafi for his work in the past on Facebook on Wednesday, to task and have instructed them not to support him on social media. Senior officials said Rafi has been punished as they have clearly noticed flaws in his work.” On the other hand, Protests continued outside Pulakeshinagar (Frazer Town) Police Station to reconsider the suspension of Rafi.

Uproar in Assembly:

Home minister K J George, who drew a lot of flak in the assembly on the way the case was handled,  informed the assembly of the filing of the FIR against the inspector and the arrest of  two  suspects  Mohammed Ali alias Sheikh Ali, and Waseem Khan.

A hunt is on to find the other two who have been absconding,” George said in the Assembly. The minister’s action-taken-report failed to convince the opposition as they sought the home minister’s resignation, citing failure of law and order.

Speaker Kagodu Thimmappa intervened to reveal to the assembly that the victim’s family was known to him. “I know the victim’s family and they are family friends. They are a learned and well educated family. Her dad had spoken to me over the phone about the entire incident. I request the home minister to visit the family tomorrow and console the family to instil confidence in them,” he said.

There was a verbal duel between an emotional George and the opposition BJP on the subject.
