Bangalore: Police had arrested two engineers of the BDA for causing an accident near the Devara beesanahalli flyover on the Outer Ring Road , in which a techie and a cab driver died, and the techie’s wife was severely injured. They were on the way to the airport when the accident occurred. Police arrested two BDA engineers and a project manager for “failing to paint the central median with reflective paint and installing sign boards. (Read the earlier story here) The trio has been charged with negligence.
The Karnataka Engineers’ Federation heavily condemned the move on the part of the police. They have submitted a memorandum to the chief minister seeking his directions to have the cases withdrawn. The memorandum was submitted to the CM on Tuesday at the Engineers’ Day function at Palace Grounds.
In their memorandum, engineers have stated that road safety is the “complete domain of traffic police”. “It is not proper for them to blame the engineers for some road accident,” the memorandum signed by office bearers states. “Traffic police are making engineers a scapegoat when accidents take place. Accidents are taking place because of the failure and negligence of the traffic police. Hence, it is not proper on their part to arrest engineers.”
The federation has also taken objection to the police arresting BESCOM engineers in connection with cases of electrocution and transformer bursts. They have requested the CM to intervene and get these cases withdrawn. The federation also wants the police to stop arresting engineers in connection with sand mining which is taking place in river bed areas.
The Karnataka Engineers’ Federation is a registered body which has engineers as members from various government departments like BDA, PWD, BWSSB, BESCOM, KEB, KPTCL, and Karnataka State Highways departments.
