Bangalore: There are around 19 Congress aspirants for the ticket to contest from Bellary Rural Assembly seat; however the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and State Congress president G Parameshwara have failed to shortlist the candidate due to differences.
On Wednesday July 30, the high command was to finalize the probable party candidates for the Bellary Rural Assembly constituency. A large number of members from the Bellary District Congress functionaries demanded that only a local leader should be fielded in the bypoll and opposed giving the ticket to former MLA from Molakalmur N Y Gopalakrishna.
Pressing their demand, the party workers also held a protest, each of them backing their own leader.
Senior leaders of the party from the district, including Diwakar Babu, N Y Hanumanthappa, Abdul Wahab and Anil Lad, were invited to the meeting. The duo held one-on-one meeting with each of these leaders and elicited their opinion, sources said.
However, the chief minister and the KPCC president could not shortlist the candidates in the meeting.
The by-elections are scheduled to be held on August 21 for the three constituencies of Bellary Rural, Chikodi-Sadalga and Shikaripura.
