Bangalore: From September 10th, there will be both good news and bad news for travellers. The good news is that Majestic will be easier to traverse, with buses to 20 of the 30 districts in Karnataka will be shifted to the satellite bus stand at Peenya as the starting point.
The bad news is that commuters from Indiranagar and surrounding areas will have to travel all the way to Peenya to catch the bus. In consolation however, they won’t be stuck in the traffic for hours on end on Thursday evening or Friday morning at Majestic.
Both BMTC and KSRTC operate from the existing bus stand. The bus stand is further congested as it is exactly opposite the city railway station. Compounding the mess is the ongoing work for the central Metro terminus under this transport hub, making commuting there, especially when people are going on long weekend getaways, a traffic nightmare.
KSRTC took some of the burden away from the main bus stand by establishing the satellite bus stand for Mysore-bound buses in 2005 and for Tamil Nadu buses from Shantinagar bus stand in 2010. Now, taking a big leap, from September 10, buses for 20 of the state’s 30 districts — two thirds of the state — will be operated from the newly named Basaveshwara bus stand at Peenya.
Feeder buses from Majestic and other areas will ferry passengers straight to Peenya, from where they can take buses to Hubli and North-West Karnataka region, followed by Hospet, Bellary and North-East Karnataka region, Shimoga, Hassan and Central Karnataka region. Ultimately, even buses to nearby Tumkur and Pavagada will operate from Peenya.
