Bangalore: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday launched a mobile phone application (app) to enable Kannada interface on Android mobile phones. The app is free and can be downloaded from the website-  www.karnataka.gov.in/kcit. A committee headed by K Chidananda Gowda, former vice-chancellor of Kuvempu University developed the app.

This mobile application gives information regarding historical monuments and festivals of Karnataka. The information on the app is available in both Kannada and English.

Making way towards mobile learning, the Karnataka Software Development Committee (KSDC) under Prof Chidananda Gowda proposed the app to easily access information about the history and monuments of the State.

Information about 700 historical monuments and numerous festivals like the Hampi Utsav are now available on the app. The application is currently compatible with an Android OS. The Kannada and Culture Department application can be downloaded via Google Play.

Kannada Unicode software for mobile interface in Kannada allows the user to send messages and upload social media texts in Kannada. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah uploaded the first Kannada social media message using Unicode during the launch.

Gowda informed that the Kannada Unicode software is free for all and can be downloaded from the Kannada and Culture Department website. “It is imperative for this software to be freely available for people in today’s day and age of technology to save Kannada language from dying,” noted Jnanpith awardee Dr Chandrashekar Kambar.
