Bangalore :The Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) will soon replace the old electromechanical meters with electrostatic ones following directions from Central Electricity Authority.

Bescom General Manager (Meter and Commercial) Satish Kumar said there were approximately 20 lakh old meters (including commercial ones) that were at least 20 years old.

“The replacement will be made as per the guidelines of the Central Electricity Authority,” he said.

The cost of each new electronic meter is Rs 900. However, the consumers will not be charged for the replacement, he added.

The high precision digital meters are very accurate and the replacement of meters will either be done by the Bescom staff or will be outsourced. Meter protection box will also be provided to those which do not have a box now, Kumar added.

He said that meter protection box was essential in areas where weather conditions could affect the device.

Kumar added that in places where meters were located inside the houses, it would be shifted out to make it easy for reading.
