Bangalore : While many others celebrated their Independence Day frolicking in the malls or going to the movies, around 70 volunteers from the Rajajinagar branch of Art of Living took the onus upon themselves to bring about a change in society. Through the day, they spent time visiting residential areas and shops urging people to switch over to alternatives other than plastic.
In the course of the campaign, they distributed over 1500 eco-friendly bags to households and asked them to reduce plastic usage to the maximum extent possible.
The volunteers who took part in the awareness programme agreed that it was a daunting task indeed to completely rid the city of plastic usage. However they feel that efforts to minimize plastic usage need to take place on a regular basis, which will lead to a transformation in the long run.
The volunteers say that they have dedicated themselves to the task of awareness, and every month they take up one topic. This has been going on since May. The topics covered so far include how to save water, how to convert kitchen waste into manure, and how to effectively dispose garbage. The striking point of all these awareness campaigns is that the volunteers go on ground, and interact with the people door-to-door, practically demonstrating to them what has to be done.
That’s not all! In July, the team visited Sarasvathi Seva Trust, Mahalaxmipuram and donated a lumpsome for the education of underprivileged children. The volunteers say that all these are done by common folk, with a common aim, and AOL provides them with a platform for the same.
