Bengaluru: In a gesture of generosity that has given a fresh lease of life to five others, the 82-year-old mother of a Vidhana Soudha canteen supervisor donated the organs of her brain dead son on Wednesday.
S Srinivas (58), the donor, was hit by a two-wheeler while crossing the road on February 28 in Malleswaram. He was taken to K C General Hospital and then to Chord Road Hospital after which he was taken to Mallige Hospital where he was declared brain dead.
His mother, S Chandramathi Rao, had read in newspapers about organ donation. She did not think twice when doctors informed that her son’s organs could save the lives of others.
“We wanted our son’s organs to benefit poor patients. I am happy that he will live on through others,” she said.
The Zonal Coordination Committee of Karnataka for Transplantation (ZCCK), the nodal agency for facilitating organ transplants in the State, finalised the list of recipients. While the kidneys were donated to patients in St John’s and Columbia Asia Hospitals, the liver went to BGS Global Hospital. The corneas were donated to Lions’ Eye Bank.
