Raja’s Seat: A park over a British cemetery

Raja’s Seat, is one of the most scenic locations in Kodagu. It’s a sunset point, with a valley and green mist-laden mountains which offers a wonderful sight to watch in the evenings.

Coffee estates, lovely flowers in full bloom, winding roads, make a visit to this scenic spot memorable. The moment someone says Kodagu, Raja’s seat comes to mind.

Not only at dawn and dusk, but also on a hot sunny afternoon, one can feel the cool breeze here. The view from Raja’s seat is breathtaking as one can gaze upon the green valleys and towering hills.

The little park in the middle of the town is built on an old British cemetery. As time passed by, the cemetery was shifted elsewhere, and a garden was developed there with seasonal and artificial flowers. The artificial musical fountains here at the Raja’s Seat which is under the Horticultural department’s jurisdiction, make every tourist’s visit a memorable one.

The Kings (rajas) of Kodagu spent their evenings at this vantage point watching spectacular sunsets with their Queens. A small seating “mantap” used to be their seats, which lead to its being christened “Raja’s Seat”.

There is also a small toy train service, which takes tourists along the valley and around the park. On the journey, tourists can get a view of the mountains and the Raja’s seat from a distance. This train service was started two decades ago. Earlier it was launched at Golf ground, and  later it was shifted near the Raja’s seat as it was outside Madikeri town. Presently it is managed by the city corporation.

The Kunduru Motte Chowti Mariyamma temple stands very next to the Raja’s Seat. Also in the vicinity, is an Akashavani Centre and Nehru Mantap.

This tourist spot is not as developed as compared to other tourist places. It’s an opportunity for the administration to provide more facilities here to attract more and more tourists and make the Raja’s seat one of the more sought after tourist destinations.
