Maz Khan of Lourdes School, a  15 year old, budding cricketer has been making waves on the cricket field.  A  student of the 10th standard, he is both enthusiastic and determined.

In the recently held Mayor’s Cup 2014 (Mangaluru) and Karnataka State Cricket Association tournament, 2014 – Maz has awarded been as the Best Batsman. The kid created  amazement, when he scored an incredible 498 runs in five matches in the KSCA cup. He notched up a century in every match. Likewise in the Mayor’s cup – he scored 357 runs in 5 matches.

Maz, who is the captain of his school team – is not new to scoring. Standing tall with a shelf full of trophies, he aspires to play for the country someday. He says, “I want to represent the state and play for the country”.

Maz idolizes the stand in Indian captain and master batsman, Virat Kohli.  Maz is known to play his cricket just like him!

Maz thanks his coaches Jairaj and Arif for training him through the years, however he praised his Dad – Dr Habib Khan of Father Muller for being his true mentor.

Maz mother – Tarannum Khan says, “Since the age of three Maz has been playing cricket, at seven he started his professional training. Maz is a fighter when on the field but is quiet, shy and a soft spoken youth”, adds his mother.

Speaking about the future, Maz is focused on his career as a cricketer. As an average student, combining his love for sports especially cricket and coping up with the CBSE currriculum in a crucial year is a major challenge. “I am confident enough that I will become a cricketer”, but when asked if not, Maz maturely says, “I will focus on my college and keep practicing cricket.”

Maz’ love for sports is not limited to cricket.  He is a national level tennis player and has stood 10th in an Asian level championship few years ago. However his first love is cricket, and this love for the gentlemen’s game has brought him a lot of zonal, district, state and national level laurels and Maz says he  looks forward to becoming  a full-fledged cricketer.

Small is big it seems as far as the Indian cricket team is concerned with more than a few cricketers from small towns making it to the National team. Be it skipper Dhoni, or his young brigade,  which include the likes of Munaf Patel, S Sreesanth, Piyush Chawla and Praveen Kumar, all these players have fought against many odds in their career and proved their mettle.

Maz – who is also from a small town – here in Mangaluru, hopes to add his name to this  august  list like the one that went before him, K L Rahul, who hails from mangalore and is currently touring with the Indian Test team in Australia.
